Math Identitiy

When launching a new math curriculum, it is important to recognize and reflect on our own math identities, which inform how we think about the nature of mathematics. As educators, our personal math identities influence how we help children engage with concepts and ideas.

In this module, you will have an opportunity to explore math identity. Take a moment to read through the following definition of math identity, which comes from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics Resource Guide.

"Math identity is...

  • A view of oneself as a doer, knower, and sense maker of mathematics;
  • A deeply held belief about one’s own ability to engage successfully with mathematics;
  • Shaped by children’s mathematics learning experiences and interactions with peers and adults;
  • Affected by beliefs about the nature of mathematics and the learning of mathematics."
